“Don’t ever forget to dress for yourself first and the rest will follow.”

Who do you dress for? Most of you may think how hard it is to answer “myself” But really who do you dress for? Some people dress to please others and make them happy. I some time hear girls say  ” Oh my boyfriend wouldn’t like that” or “No he thinks I am weird when I dress like this .” Women should dress not for men, nor even for other women, but for themselves.

I loved playing dress up as a little girl and it never really stopped for me. I like to have fun with my outfits and be creative. In the last years I have developed a big crush on men T-shits and  shirts. I tend to wear them a lot. They are just so got damn comfortable and I feel really cool when I am comfy. So when he was giving away some T-shirts and shirts, I pounced on the pile and claimed some before anyone could get their hands on. I grew up with 3 other siblings, 2 elder sisters and 1 younger brother.  I use to find his clothes more interesting and occasionally steal haha… No borrow from him. I liked it then and I like it now. Looks like nothing has changed 🙂

We don’t have to be afraid to be ourselves. Don’t let men decide what’s sexy for you, decide for yourself. If you feel sexy and great in a pair of mom jeans. Wear it and don’t give a shit. If sneakers are your thing, wear them everywhere you go. If men could dress women then we all will be stuck in a body con dress forever. Haha.. and that’s my worst fear. Take it from the Icons like Diane Keaton, Chloë Sevigny, and Fran Lebowitz, these women had great sense of personal style and they did it without embracing body con fitted dresses.

And btw, these pictures are taken after work and I am wearing that men t-shirt I was talking about 🙂

So happy it’s Spring again. This winter has been dragging for far too long and we can’t wait to feel the heat wave. Well, Spring time means summer is on it’s way.

We have already seen overload of all nude everything. And we have a feeling it’s going to get crazier. Imagine tan skin and nude. What’s not to love about 🙂 After yesterday we realised that summer is almost here, and we are getting summer ready. We love colours but some how we have this secret lust for nudes. Like this Topshop jumpsuit was definitely love at first sight. One day I walked into work and this beauty looking right at me… PICK ME UP! And guess what I did. This colour, the pattern, backless detail and beautiful fabric. This is definitely my favourite piece for this season.

There is a new trend in town and we are in love. Cold shoulders are here stay! From Celine, Chanel To Givenchy we saw this trend taking over the runway. Legs, cleavage and abs have always been shown by media as the sexy part of women’s body. However, this spring/summer collection was so refreshing to see designers take new direction.

Though this trend is not meant for everyone, I still think you can embrace this in so many different ways. Honestly, I feel most women are conscious about their arms and it’s always been looked as a “men thing to have strong arms and shoulders”. However, things have changed over the years. Women of this age want to be healthy, fit, independent and successful. And they like the idea of breaking the stereotype 😉

I don’t know if it’s too early to start dressing for summer already? Well, It’s been a long weird winter so far. Christmas felt like spring with flowers blooming in the Garden and in few weeks it went straight to  freezing  – 5. So, here we are discussing all things summer and positive vibes only. Haha… Having said that,  I am a sucker for positive energy. “ Be the energy you want to attract “ Some time in life when things don’t go the way you wanted them to be, just take a deep breath and remember nothing is permanent and this shall pass too. We all go through that bump and I believe its life’s way of giving us a reality check. Be patient and let it pass. I like to think of it in a positive way and be grateful for  what I have and be thankful that it would have been worse. The best therapy I believe in is “Run it out”. Go run through the rain, wind or sunshine… run harder, faster and faster. Detox from what happened and move on. And the most important surround yourself with positive energy, because this is the time we need it the most.

So today I am looking back to my summer time Goa and it puts a big smile on my face 🙂

I seriously thank god for my job, because I can wear whatever the hell I want to work. It’s such a relief to wake up in the morning and walk into my closet and pick whatever I feel like it. I let my imagination be in charge. I find inspiration in everything; people, place, colour, movie and more.

Would you laugh if I say I dressed like Julia Roberts from Pretty women after watching the movie? It was a perfect girls night; food, wine, catch up and Pretty Women. I woke up the next morning and I knew what I was feeling. Denim skirt, crisp white shirt tied at the waist, big hair and over the knee boots. So excited about my outfit and people to guess. I had few positive hits and they know the inspiration behind the look. Bam… Mission accomplished. My outfit choices say a lot about how I am feeling and what mood I am in. So next time you bump into me you better be ready to do some guess work.

After few days of rain and dropping temperatures and just when we had enough, It was almost 10 degrees with sun. Amsterdam is a most beautiful city when the sun is shinning. I was happy and determined to catch some sun even If I had to work all day. I had a lunch date with a friend and we also managed to get few shoots in the sun. Over all, what a gorgeous day! Now we are looking forward to more sunny days like these. Hopefully the winter is over.

Queen of all Yoga poses! Shoulderstand or Salamba Sarvangasana

Hope everyone is ready to kickstart this week. Well, I am feeling extra excited after my holidays. Last 3 weeks were amazing and obviously it went by super fast.

Today I am talking about mother of all asana; Shoulder Stand or Salamba Sarvangasana. B.K.S Iyengar referred shoulder stand as the Queen of Asana or Sarvangasana. In Iyengar’s own words (book of yoga) ’Light on Yoga’ “The importance of Sarvangasana cannot be over-emphasised. It is one of the greatest boons conferred on humanity by our ancient sages. Sarvangasana is the Mother of asanas. As a mother strives for harmony and happiness in the home, this asana strives for harmony and happiness in the human system. it is a panacea for most common ailments.”

Do you know what Sarvangasana actually means? In Sanskrit, Sarva means “all” or “entire” and Anga means “organ” or “body part.” Translated, it means “full body pose” because of its benefits for the whole body. Since it helps the entire body you ca not ignore the benefits from this pose. In fact Sri Dharma Mittra states that “some yogi’s only do this pose,” and it can be held from 30 seconds to 30 minutes. So Sarvangasana is cure to all: from common cold to constipation.

Here are some of the positive effects of Shoulder Stand:

1) Answer to thyroid imbalance: This pose is proven to balance thyroid and hypothalamus glands. It brings blood to the thyroid and parathyroid, helping them properly secrete hormones.

2)  Strengthens the heart and lungs: Due to the inverted position, it reduces strain on the heart. It gives the heart a break from working so hard and helps to oxygenate the lungs. This pose has positive effect on people suffering from asthma, bronchitis and throat ailments may get relief.

3) Soothes and calms the nervous system: Sarvangasana is an answer to people who are easily irritated or prone to anger or nervous breakdowns. Daily practice of Sarvangasana will stabilise and make you less reactive to life’s circumstances.

4) Reduces constipation: Because of the inversion and change in gravitation the bowels move freely and constipation is relieved.

5) Activates throat chakra ( VISUDDAH): Shoulderstand is also practice to activate our fifth chakra. This chakra is associated with creativity and self expression. When this Chakra is open, our negative experiences can easily be transformed into wisdom and leaning.

6) Treats insomnia: Practicing Shoulderstand promotes deep sleep and therefore help cure insomnia.

7) Reduces wrinkles: Did you know that Marilyn Monroe was a yogi and practiced Shoulderstand daily? Well, Due to increased blood flow to the face, wrinkles can be reduced.

As with many yoga postures, there are contraindications.

  •  People with high blood pressure, detached retina, glaucoma, hernias, cardiovascular disease, cervical spondylitis, and/or slipped discs should not practice shoulderstand.
  • If you have or have had a neck injury, seek advice from an experienced yoga teacher before beginning to practice shoulderstand.
  • Avoid during pregnancy.
  • It is advised that women avoid inversions when menstruating.
  • To receive similar benefits in a more restorative way, try placing a block under the sacrum to elevate the hips above the heart for Vipartita Karani (or legs up the wall)

How to do Shoulderstand:

Place the heels of the palms at the small of your back with the fingertips pointing up towards the ceiling. Lift the legs up high into the air into Shoulder Stand.Move the chin away from your chest, pull in through the belly and tuck the pelvis under. You want the ankles to be stacked above the knees, knees above the hips and hips above shoulders in one straight line.Exhale to release the knees back to the chest and slowly roll down the spine. Keep the knees in and slowly rock side to side.

Note: Shoulder stand is considered to be an intermediate to advanced pose. Do not perform this pose without prior experience or unless you are performing under the supervision of an experienced instructor.

Some of you who know me personally know that I practice yoga in the morning before stepping of the house. Shoulderstand is one of the posture that I will do every single day. It has personally helped me in many ways. Hope you guys are inspired to practice and get on that mat everyday.
